The History of FOOD RADIO!
In 2006, Dane Neal was co-hosting a morning drive radio show in Chicago, when a chance on air sit in by former restaurateur Tom Reboletti talking about Chicago’s favorite foods and the places we find them started the conversation…And just after that one segment the beginnings of a new show called “Restaurant Radio” took shape.
Restaurant Radio soon became its own full 2 hour show with a popular weekly Friday drive time spot on WJJG 1530 ( now WCKG AM)… In 2008 Restaurant Radio moved to the larger WIND 560 AM regularly featuring all the top stars of the food world including Food Network’s Guy Fieri, Giada DeLaurentiis, Bobby Flay, along with stars local to Chicago like Chef Rick Bayless and Graham Elliot, and legends like Paul Prudhomme, Jack Lalanne and Jacques Pepin.
Within months Restaurant Radio became the nationally syndicated “Restaurant Radio America” airing each week on over 60 stations with the national “Restaurant Radio Minute” feature heard on nearly 300 stations through 2012.
In 2012 Dane also began the effort towards the creation of what would become “Flavor HD” adding local public affairs host Hannah Stanley to the mix. Flavor HD would bring all the top stars of food that were Dane’s friends and regular radio guests, along with the recipes, enthusiasm and home cook “perspective” that Hannah could share. Flavor HD would soon become a weekly featured segment on Restaurant Radio America.
Joining WGN 720 radio host Bill Leff for overnight segments on food and fun starting in spring of 2012, The shows guest chemistry and popular content, led to Flavor HD being offered its own Sunday show, which by February 2013 had become the highest rated show in its time slot for the Chicago market. Flavor HD continued to be a part of WGN Radio’s weekly feature line up and remained part of the Bill and Wendy Show until it became “The Dane Neal Show” on WGN and WGN Plus. Dane regularly hosts programs during nights and weekends at WGN radio and always stay tuned for Dane live on Wednesdays as part of the Bill and Wendy Show.
